The Magic Fountain

The magic fountain of Montjuïc's (Font màgica de Montjuïc in Catalan) first performance was on May 19, 1929 during the Great Universal Exhibition. The designer Carles Buigas submitted his plans one year before the exhibition and many thought that the project was too ambitious to be created, let alone completed on time.

Over 3000 workers were commissioned to work on the project and less than 1 year later the magic fountain was born.

It could be said that the Montjuic Magic Fountain remains true to its name: during the displays, the moving water jets, illuminated in shifting shades and hues and synchronised with light and music, look like a magic dance which unfolds, subsides, rises and falls, is concealed and bursts forth before our eyes.  The Magic Fountain, a master piece designed by the engineer Carles Buigas, was one of the great successes of the 1929 Internationl Exhibition.  The fountain was painstakingly restored for the 1992 Barcelona Games so that it could continue to offer a unique display to delight all age groups.

We arrived just before 7:00 PM and snapped a few pictures.  In winter they only have displays on Friday and Saturday from 7 to 9 PM.  It was closed for maintenance when we arrived and this was the firs weekend it was re-opened, just in time for Sandy to see it before she left for home.  Great timing as they are spectacular.

The pictures do not do it justice.  You can't hear the music or see the ever changing light.  Just beautiful.  If you come to Barcelona, don't miss the show; and it's free.

We all thought it rivals anything we have seen in Las Vegas

After the show we walked down to the old bull arena (now a shopping mall) and had dinner at an italian restaurant on the rooftop overlooking the night lights.  Good food and atmosphere for Sandy's last night.
